ETFs vs mutual funds

I've been a proponent of stock index mutual funds for a long time. They're cheap, tax-efficient and convenient. But how do they compare with exchange-traded funds (ETFs)? As you probably know, ETFs trade like stocks but act like mutual funds. Huh? One can buy an ETF in a brokerage account and trade it like a stock all day long.
