Get a paper shredder
Ever just throw an old utility bill or mass mailing credit card offer into the trash? Maybe you tore it up for good measure. That's not good enough! Crooks can easily use these to steal your identity and your good credit rating. But what documents should you file -- credit card statements, mutual fund reports, doctor's reports, etc. -- and which are safe to destroy?
Here's a good way to decide: If you need to go to a government office, wait in a long line or deal with waiting on hold then it's likely best to keep at least the latest copy. But if you can get any of these just by going online then dump the paper.
But get a shredder anyway!
