Beware of identity theft

So I was minding my own business when an email popped up from my online bank telling me that someone had checked my login name. Didn't sound like a big deal but I logged onto the account to check. Everything looked fine but I thought I might as well take advantage of the opportunity and change my password. Done and done.

A few minutes later I received an email thanking me for reconfirming my email address. Hmm, I actually changed my password. When I went back in I saw that a large sum had been withdrawn in cash from a branch of my online bank. I've never been to a branch of my online bank! All my transactions have been online.

In a panic I tried to find a number that would get me to the right person -- apparently it's difficult to find a consumer fraud phone number! But I was able to make my way through and talked to a representative. Apparently someone walked into a branch with what I assume is a fake drivers license and proceeded to make a withdrawal with no difficulty! We're not talking cyber-fraud here; just a simple and seemingly normal transaction.

Now I don't know why the bank didn't look for further verification but think of all the times a simple drivers license provided a way to honestly access your funds or anything else!

Long story short, the bank will reimburse my loss within 48 hours and has added some protective bells and whistles to my account. In the meantime, I'm going to be watching all my transactions more carefully and respond when anything looks even minutely out of whack!
